Default Christmas: A mix of Truth and Paganism...

Christmas time is upon us again. The bell ringers are standing next to retail outlets wearing their forced smiles. Neighborhoods are full of vain front yard displays, put up to compensate for insecurities. Newspapers and mailboxes are filled with advertisments from companies or stores trying to rob you as they appeal to the materialistic human heart.

The question often asked is, "What is pagan, and what is really christian.?" We as Christians have to sift out the truth. We know that the early church wanted to convert pagans and therefore would often have an alternate celebration to counter the pagan rites. The pagans often celebrated the birthdate of the pagan deity Tammuz (aka Bacchus, etc..). And these festivals would naturally fall on or near the Winter solstice. This was not the birthdate of Jesus, but it helped to convert pagans of various rites and customs. With this said the early church seemed to adopt so many pagan customs and symbols that it became more pagan than Christian. This seems to be the case for much of the early Catholic church. With this said lets look at some christmas symbols and customs--

*Santa Clause- Several theories exist about "Santa" but the best seems to be that "Santa Clause" is simply the elaboration of the life and doings of Saint Nickolaus, who lived from 274 to 343 AD. He was a Bishop of Myra, in southern Asia Minor. It is said that Nickolaus was very generous and left gifts and coins to the poor.. It is not hard to believe that this person evolved into "Saint Nik"...

*Yule Logs-These are completely pagan and are connected to fire worship and Bel or Baal, but with a Nordic twist...

*Mistletoe-hanging the Mistletoe is entirely pagan...

*Nativity dispalys-These sometimes have subtle paganism mixed in. Here is a link to some illustrations.

*Christmas trees--Although Jeremiah, chapter 10, says a few things about tree worship, the Christian does not worship trees....

We need to use discernment and make an effort to get rid of the materialism and paganism in Christmas, but we should reform without being fanatical...

The term you're discribing is called "sanctification". It is based on the Apostle Paul's teachings. There is nothing wrong with celebrating with a Christmas Tree or a Yule Log. Local customs and celebrations are continued while replacing false understanding with the knowledge that there is only one Creator God.

I tend to agree because a tree is not worshiped and can also represent Life in Christ. The star, on top, can represent the star seen by the magi. Pagans don't have a monopoly on trees or logs, on the other hand, the problem with materialism is very evident and I think children should be told the truth about "Santa", that he is not real, except that he was a generous Christian leader, along time ago. The whole thing should be more altruistic and simplified.

Just the same Deuteronomy 18:9-12 should be taken seriously
