The Little Willow
Posted On 06/22/2017 23:55:23 by PastorZomok

While going on a hike along a low lake I seen some small Willow trees.  This one scene I decided to paint as I have been out of practice for several weeks.  Because of the way these trees will grow and sit hanging over water the term "Weeping Willow" has been applied.  In my region, in the lower coastal estuaries, can be found many swamp willows.  These do remind one sometimes of a person with head down and weeping.  Perhaps, they can remind one of Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, and the Hebrew people weeping in their captivities, along Babylonian rivers. Interestingly, Psalm 137 mentions willows (some say no) and has been ascribed, by some rabbinical sources, as produced by Jeremiah. These are things to think on...

Some species of Willows are mentioned in the scriptures.  We see this inLeviticus 23:40,

"On the first day you are to take the product of majestic trees--palm fronds, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook--and rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days." ..

Willows have often been used to symbolize both joy and sadness, as well as strength and health.  Occasionally I see some grave stones with etchings of Willow branches.
