Brief musings about Ash Wednesday
Posted On 03/14/2014 11:12:10 by PastorZomok

The ritual of putting moist ashes, on the foreheads of people, is practiced by many churches.  It is common among Catholics and Anglicans, as well as some Methodists. "Ashes" is put into the catagory of "sacramentals", not to be confused with "sacraments".  This ritual seems to be used as a reminder of repentance for sins.  Instead of pouring ashes over ones head while wearing sackcloth and lamenting, as Job (Job 2:12) or David did, it is now practiced in a simple form of just a minister placing a cross of ashes on the forehead of a person.

I do not condemn or approve of this practice.  I think it has some positive aspects in that some wear the ash cross a whole day to help witness to others.  It is also a sign of hope, but I think simply wearing a cross has the same effect...?
