Jesus Loves Me
Posted On 08/16/2006 16:32:10 by Silenz
One of the many cruelties of our earth is the ironically ageless certainty that all things grow old. Some things, with age, become more valuable. Other things are then seen as having no value at all. With endless repetition, knowledge by rote, and sometimes simply familiarity, privileges or truths we should hold dear seem to lose their importance. This is almost unavoidably true of our wealthy country, whether it be freedom, worship, speech, or something so simple as the ability to turn a faucet and draw clean water. Oftentimes as Christians we grow cold to the priceless truths our God has made so easily accessible to us in our freedom.

I can’t remember ever having been entirely thrilled with the song ‘Jesus Loves Me’. Perhaps as a small child I was, as certainly all of them seem to be. As I grew older, however, the song became tiresome in its familiarity, redundant chorus and lack of a better tune. To me, the song was so old. At times I wonder if even non-Christians know the childhood song, ‘Jesus Loves Me’.

Tonight, the song is still old. It’s still engraved in my brain after years of repetition, and still carries a simple tune that the entire world seems to hum together. But tonight...tonight the old song offers fresh meaning. Or timeless meaning, rather, that I so often chose to ignore while hearing it. Tonight the words mean more to me than they ever did. As I sit amidst mixed voices of disappointment, sadness, and anger, I am tempted to question the pain I don’t seem to deserve. Why me? Another phrase grown old and tiresome. I have found, with so little reflection, that in times of need there are few words that truly comfort me. Tonight I am comforted. Somewhere deep within me, ringing out in the simple, feeble tune of an ageless childhood song, are the quiet words that somehow cover pain’s deafening roar and bring at last a comforting silence. “Jesus loves me, this I know...”
